According to a report from Reuters, Amazon is developing smart glasses to help its delivery drivers navigate faster and easier. These glasses would give drivers turn-by-turn directions on a small screen, making it easier to find their way around buildings and neighborhoods to deliver packages faster.


The glasses, known by the code name ‘Amelia’, are said to show drivers exactly where to go, even in difficult places such as in apartment buildings or around fences. They can also warn drivers of obstacles such as dogs or closed gates. By freeing drivers’ hands from using GPS devices, the glasses would allow them to transport more packages and deliver them more efficiently. With millions of packages to be delivered every day, Amazon hopes that saving even a few seconds per stop will make a big difference.


The move is part of Amazon’s efforts to reduce delivery costs, especially as the company faces increased competition from Walmart, which is offering new incentives to its delivery drivers during the busy holiday season.


Delivering to the customer’s door is the most complex and expensive part of the process. Amazon’s delivery costs rose to $23.5 billion last quarter, so the company is working on ways to be more efficient. The company has already started using scanners in delivery trucks to help drivers find packages faster. These new glasses could go one step further by speeding up the “last 100 meters” to the customer’s door.


Despite their potential, these smart glasses aren’t done yet. Amazon needs to solve problems like making a battery that lasts all day while keeping the glasses light and comfortable. The company also must collect detailed maps of neighborhoods and delivery locations, which could take years.


Another potential problem is convincing drivers to wear glasses, which some may find uncomfortable or distracting. Amazon may eventually require drivers to wear them, especially since many of its drivers work for third-party companies that Amazon has contracted.


The new delivery glasses build on Amazon’s previous Echo Frames, smart glasses that let users listen to audio and issue voice commands to Alexa. However, Echo Frames haven’t been very popular so far. Some reports say fewer than 10,000 pairs of the latest model were sold, although Amazon disputes this. Amazon plans a new version of Echo Frames with a similar screen by 2026.


There is no guarantee that the glasses will ever be launched. If Amazon can’t get the technology or battery right, the project could be postponed or canceled.
